Q&A with Alexzandra Hughes – Family Lawyer, Manchester

Why did you decide to join Stowe?

Stowe only practice in Family Law and are a specialist firm. Stowe are experts in their field. Coming from a larger firm that dealt with different areas of law, I felt that there was no scope for progression and that I had hit a wall. I wanted to work as part of a bigger team with the in-depth knowledge and experience that Stowe had to offer.

It was evident that Stowe were committed to their employees, offering many different career opportunities and avenues for progression. Stowe were interested in my career goals and aspirations from the very beginning. That was important to me as I am still relatively junior in my career as a lawyer.

How has the journey been?

I joined Stowe at a time of change. From the outset, joining Stowe has been a positive experience. It can always somewhat daunting starting a new firm. However, Stowe made me feel welcome and comfortable from my first day.

They offer a period of induction training, which covers everything that you need to know.

Flexible working

Stowe offer hybrid working which means we generally spend a minimum of 20% of our time in the office. There is the option to attend the offices more than one day a week if this works for you.

Stowe offer that work/life balance, which other firms do not.

In my previous firm, I would often work long hours, struggling to log off at a reasonable hour. Knowing Stowe not only offer, but recognise and encourage flexible working hours which suit you is refreshing.

At the beginning, I struggled with the flexibility as I was not used to it and it is not something most firms offer. Stowe encourage all employees to find a balance which suits them.

What support and guidance did you receive at Stowe?

The support and guidance offered by Stowe is second to none.

Everyone that works at Stowe is helpful and nothing is too much trouble. Regardless of the team, people are always willing to help.

Being junior, you can often feel like you are asking a ‘stupid question’ and you should already know the answer. Stowe’s approach to learning and development makes me feel the opposite. The support and guidance at Stowe has given me more confidence as a lawyer.

How do Stowe support wellbeing?

Stowe offer paid wellness days throughout the year, in addition to annual leave. It is reassuring and refreshing to know that Stowe are not only aware, but acknowledge that everyone has bad days and may need a day to themselves. Stowe fully support wellbeing and are invested in their employees

As well as wellness days, Stowe offer additional support for employees in relation to mental, physical and financial wellbeing.
